Firemen

Why you annoy me:

• You are generally regarded as heroes by people of low intellect.  Granted, you have a dangerous job.  If dangerous jobs alone made heroes then timber cutters, who have the most dangerous job in the country, would be heroes.  Granted you have a job based around helping people.  If public service alone made heroes social workers would be heroes.  They aren’t, and you aren’t.
• You are arrogant from the adulation you receive and feel entitled to benefits.  First, you aren’t entitled to anything more than your salary.  Second, your arrogance doesn’t seem to jive with your supposedly heroic lifestyle.
• Such fine reservoirs of journalistic integrity like A Current Affair have proven that firemen live a lifestyle of drunken debauchery and frat house antics.  This is annoying because I don’t get to live that lifestyle and because it shows you for what you are: not heroes, but rather 20 year old non-college graduates who wanted a job that would pay them to be in shape and would help them get girls.  How noble!
• After 9/11 we were supposed to feel all proud about the FDNY and rightfully so since many did die, in a fairly noble manner.  However, firefighters in every other part of the country tried to parlay that goodwill into their own gain.
• Speaking of FDNY, they can go climb a tree now.  I understood the goodwill after 9/11.  But now there is no excuse to see people with FDNY stickers on the car or wearing FDNY hats.  None.
• Seems to me that people who wear FDNY hats are usually also wearing a West Coast Choppers shirt.  Highly annoying.

 Possible mitigating factors:

• You may save my life or possessions one day, which would be cool.
• Less annoying than the “Let’s Roll” phenomenon.
• None of this applies to volunteer units, who are generally selfless individuals.
